I responded “yes” when a woman offered to pat my dog during one of our walks. My dog approached her like he usually did because he enjoys pats, but then he abruptly lifted his leg and pissed on her
It was really awkward and startling. At the age of eight, he has never done it before. He has never had an accident since he completed his toilet training. I don’t believe it was since he never seemed excited about approaching the other individual.
I simply don’t see why he did that. Is there anyone who knows?
When I was around a year old, my own dog did this to me. He was completely potty trained at the time, and he hasn’t done it since. At times, dogs may be quite strange.
Fireworks have never troubled my dog before, but for some reason this year they seemed to aggravate him. I had planned to put him in my bedroom to help him relax, so I shut the windows, turned on the fan, and turned down the lights. Instead, he created a massive puddle of pee directly outside my bedroom door. He can now only snarl and bark at fireworks while I try to reroute him for the time being.
If you haven’t already, consider getting your dog a thunder shirt for when the fireworks go off. For them, it’s like having a continual hug. Don’t put him in a room by himself, perhaps. That may have increased his worry by giving him a sense of helplessness. Not want to offend or imply that you’re not a good dog parent—I’m sure you know your dog, of course. I just wanted to share a few tips that have worked well for my friends’ pets in the past.
Keeping him inside isn’t an option right now. He was indoors for maybe 2 hours, and it wasn’t until the third time I checked on him and cleaned up the puddle by the door that I realized it was pee, not drool. The first two years were fine, but now that he’s almost 3, his drive and boundary protection instincts seem to be getting stronger. He decided fireworks were his mortal enemy this year. I’ve finally found a toy he loves (he’s not very food-motivated), and I’m using that to work with him more. With that toy, he’s at least 80% focused and responsive.
