Anyone else have a dog that barks like crazy at other animals?

I’ve got a Brussels Griffon, and the only issue we have is his insane barking whenever he sees other animals. He goes nuts when we’re out biking, and it sounds like he’s being tortured. He also does it in the car and even when he sees animals on TV. It’s really startling for people and their dogs, and it’s kinda dangerous on the bike cause he jumps around in the basket. Anyone have tips on how to stop this? I’m out of ideas…

Oh man, my dog used to do that too! It’s tough to stop, but it sounds like Buddy needs to be desensitized to the animals. Try taking him on walks where he can see other dogs and let him get a little worn out before biking. It helps to calm them down a bit.

Good idea, I’ll try that. My dog freaks out at dogs on TV too. Is there a way to fix that?

Yeah, try giving him something to focus on, like a Kong with peanut butter. That might distract him from the TV and calm him down.

I’m dealing with the same thing! It’s the worst when they act all crazy while biking. I’ve started doing some calm training with my dog when he sees other animals and it’s slowly working.

What kind of calm training? I need all the help I can get with Buddy.

Just simple commands like ‘sit’ or ‘stay’ when he sees other animals. It’s not a quick fix, but consistency seems to help. Have you tried that?

Try desensitizing Buddy by introducing him to other dogs in a calm environment, like a dog park after a nice walk. That way, he won’t be so overstimulated, and he can learn to interact without the crazy barking.

@Rai
That sounds like a good idea! I never thought about taking him to the park after a walk. I’ll give that a go.

Is Buddy’s bark high-pitched? That can make things worse because it sounds even more alarming to other dogs and people. I’ve heard some dogs react less when their owners stay calm and just reassure them when they see other animals.

@Paw
Yeah, his bark is pretty high-pitched. I guess I need to stay calm when it happens and reassure him. I’ll try that next time.

I had a similar issue with my dog. I used positive reinforcement when he saw other dogs, and that really helped. Every time he didn’t bark or freak out, he got praise and treats. It took time, but it worked!

@Umbrielle
Ooh, I like that idea! I’ll try rewarding him when he stays calm. Hopefully, that’ll make a difference.
