Hey everyone, my dog has become really territorial and tends to bite strangers that come to my house. He’s a 3-year-old German Shepherd, male, and not desexed. It’s been a problem for a while now. He’s usually fine with me and my family, but anytime someone unfamiliar comes near, he goes crazy. He’ll bark nonstop and even attack sometimes. Anyone else dealt with this? Any advice?
Yikes, sounds rough. My dog was the same way until we started using a crate to give him a safe space when guests arrive. It helped him feel less anxious. You might wanna try that!

I’ll definitely try that! I’ve never used a crate before though… do you just put them in there when guests come over?
@Lilly
Yep, that’s what we did. It gave him some time to chill and not feel threatened. You could also leave some treats in there to make it a positive place. Took some time, but it worked!
I think the aggression started after a traumatic event, right? Sounds like he’s still reacting to that incident from 2 years ago. Maybe consider working with a professional dog trainer or behaviorist?

Yeah, I think that’s where it started. I was hoping it would get better on its own, but it’s only gotten worse. A trainer might be a good idea. Any recommendations?
@Lilly
You could look for trainers who specialize in aggression or fear-based behaviors. There are also calming products like Adaptil diffusers that might help reduce his stress. Worth a shot!
Ugh, I feel for you. I had a similar issue with my dog after a stressful experience. Definitely consult with a vet or a behaviorist. Desensitization might help, but it takes time and patience.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll look into it. It’s just hard because he’s a German Shepherd, and they’re so protective.
Not gonna lie, but it sounds like it might take a lot of work to turn this around. Maybe start by introducing him to guests slowly, with lots of rewards for calm behavior?

That’s actually a good idea. I could try introducing him to visitors little by little and reward him when he stays calm. Gonna try that!
Oh no, that must be so stressful for both of you. Maybe try using calming aids like Adaptil or even CBD oil for dogs. I’ve heard it can help with anxiety and aggression.

I’ve never tried those. Do you think they really help? My dog seems really anxious when strangers come by.
@Lilly
Yeah, I’ve had good results with both. It’s worth a try, especially since you’ve got a lot of stress around him being territorial. Just make sure to check with your vet first!
