Are scented candles bad for dogs... anyone know?

Hey everyone, I light scented candles from time to time (mostly Bath & Body Works and some from a company I found online). Nothing too strong though since I have allergies and asthma and can’t handle some fragrances. But I came across something online (I know, everything on the internet is totally true, right? lol) that said candles could be dangerous for dogs. I make sure my furbaby can’t get to the candles so she doesn’t burn herself or eat them, but is it actually bad for dogs? Any advice? Thanks!

Yeah, I’ve heard that too. Some of the oils in candles can be toxic for dogs. I think it’s more about what’s in the candle though, like peppermint, pine, or citrus. Those are the ones to watch out for.

Ugh, I didn’t even think of peppermint or pine being a problem. I use a lot of fruity scents, like apples and plums. Are those okay?

Fruity ones should be fine, but always double-check the label just in case. Soy candles are a better choice since they’re generally safer for pets.

I’ve got the same question! I burn candles all the time, but I keep them out of reach. Still, I’m worried about the air they’re putting out. Anyone know if it’s bad for their health long-term?

Yeah, burning paraffin candles can release toxins into the air, and that can be tough for both dogs and humans, especially if you have breathing issues. Soy or vegetable wax is better for everyone.

I usually buy soy candles too! I like fruity and woodsy scents. I hate peppermint and pine as well, so I’m glad I’m on the right track. Thanks for the tips!

Sounds like you’re safe with those! Just check the ingredients list to be extra sure. I’ve seen some candles even made specifically for homes with pets.

I’ve read that it’s not just the scent but also the wax that matters. Soy or beeswax candles seem to be the safest for dogs, while paraffin can cause problems. Also, make sure the candles are in a spot your dog can’t get to, just in case.

That’s good to know! I didn’t realize paraffin was so bad. I’ll stick with soy and keep them in a safe spot.

It’s true, some candles can cause breathing problems for dogs. I use soy candles now, and I’ve noticed my dog doesn’t seem bothered by them. I’d recommend avoiding anything too strong though!
