Please help, my one-year-old golden retriever likes to deep-throat (not swallow) his toys. For instance, he has an unstuffed raccoon skin toy. Only the tail, about two inches, was protruding from his throat after he had to pull it out about fourteen inches. He chews on the portions that protrude from his mouth (or maybe suckles). How can I stop doing this, or how can I better describe this to a trainer who can assist me? The last thing I want to pay for is a surgery when he inadvertently eats a toy whole.

Replace his toys with bigger ones that he cannot swallow or fit in his mouth.
My pup doesn’t do that, but she has a habit of chewing up and eating toys, which isn’t much better. I’m not entirely sure how to get her to stop, but I’ve found that the safest approach is to only let her play with toys under supervision. It’s not ideal, but it’s necessary for her safety. I recommend asking your trainer for advice on how to prevent your dog from swallowing toys, and in the meantime, avoid giving your dog unsupervised access to toys.
