Hi. My xl bully is eleven months old. She has been neutered and underwent osteochondrosis surgery on her ankle in August. She was 41kg in August and now weighs 45.5kg. She has gained weight as a result of being inactive during the recuperation process. I’ve already lowered her kibble intake, and she’s back to going to the park every day. However, she is still overweight. When she appeared to be reacting to her prior kibble (karoo), the vet recommended switching her to Hills large breed puppy food. Do you have any ideas for a different brand or type? Is it too early to switch her to an adult trim and fit kibble?
Given her age, size, and previous bone concerns, I would keep her on puppy kibble for now while feeding less. She may benefit from the additional calcium. How much do you currently feed? Hills is nutrition-dense, therefore you won’t need to feed it as much as other breeds. Remove all treats (some dog-friendly fruits and veggies are excellent substitutes). Is she allowed to swim? That could be an excellent way to lose weight without putting strain on her joints.
She was on 6 cups, according to the weight feeding chart. The veterinarian advised me to cut the amount to four cups. Treats have been much reduced. We have not yet assessed her swimming ability.
I second the swimming suggestion. It’s an excellent low-impact, full-body workout. Or, if it is a viable option, hydrotherapy. I would wear a life vest at first (considering her breed, weight, bone concerns, and lack of swimming expertise).
So I’d go with what the vet recommends. 4 cups. Regarding goodies, I would probably avoid them entirely. I realize this is harsh… However, as MaisieAndGem noted, you may always substitute healthy, low-calorie options. If your dog enjoys vegetables, carrots and cucumbers are excellent choices. We also have fruits such as apples, pears, and bananas. But I wouldn’t recommend them because they are heavy in sugar. Alternatively, you may serve homemade beef delights. Boiled turkey or chicken breast is excellent. Boiled with no oil, skin, or salt, just simple. It can be preserved in the refrigerator for about 4 days at a time, and longer in the freezer (it can also be freeze-dried).
Yes, I’ve prepared handmade sweets now. Because she appears to struggle with fruit. The veterinarian suggested that her metabolism may have slowed. The worry is that she gained weight while eating less and exercising more.
