Dog sits after being rewarded for a successful lay down

My Labrador is 12 weeks old. Training is going really well overall. One problem I’ve been experiencing is that she goes into a down instantly when I put her in one, and I give her a treat and a “yes!” in return. But as soon as I give her a reward, she gets up from her seated position. How can I find out how long she remains down? It doesn’t seem to help that I’ve been attempting to wait five to ten seconds before rewarding.

It’s fantastic that your Labrador puppy is picking up the “down” command so quickly.
Addressing the issue of her rising after the reward is a common challenge in puppy training.

Understanding the Issue:

Your puppy is likely associating the reward with the end of the command. To address this, we need to teach her to maintain the “down” position even after receiving the reward.

Strategies to Improve Down Stay:

  1. Increase Duration Gradually:
  • Start with a short down stay, rewarding her immediately.
  • Gradually increase the duration of the stay before giving the reward.
  • Use a verbal cue like “stay” to reinforce the command.
  1. Vary Reward Timing:
  • Don’t always reward immediately after the down.
  • Occasionally reward her while she’s still in the down position, encouraging her to maintain the stay.
  1. Distraction Training:
  • Introduce distractions gradually to help your puppy focus on the command.
  • Start with minimal distractions and increase them over time.
  1. Practice Regularly:
  • Consistent training sessions will help your puppy learn and retain the command.
  • Short, frequent training sessions are often more effective than long, infrequent ones.
  1. Positive Reinforcement:
  • Continue to use positive reinforcement with praise and treats to motivate your puppy.
  • Avoid punishment, as it can create fear and anxiety.

Additional Tips:

  • Be Patient: Training takes time and consistency. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results.
  • Combine with Other Commands: Practice the “down” command in combination with other commands like “stay” and “come” to reinforce the behavior.

Remember to keep training sessions fun and engaging for both you and your puppy. With patience and persistence, you’ll be able to teach your Labrador a reliable down stay.

It’s great to hear your Labrador’s training is going well! To help her stay in the down position longer, you might want to introduce a release cue. Start by giving her the “down” command, and when she complies, reward her immediately with a treat and praise. Then, instead of letting her get up on her own, use a release word like “okay” or “free” after a few seconds. Gradually increase the duration she stays down before you give the release cue, and make sure to only reward her while she’s still in the down position. This way, she learns that staying down until the release cue is given is what earns the reward. Consistency is key, and she’ll soon understand that staying put is what you want.
