She gets a lot of attention, long walks, training, play, etc - She usually stares at me when she wants something, it’s not to go out so either treat, play, or come to sit with me and be stroked… but I don’t want that all of the time and it’s annoying her just staring at me, wherever she’s sitting it’s with her eyes squarely on me and it’s all of the time now like 24 hrs a day if we’re not walking or playing then she’s either sleeping or staring at me.
She has toys inc chewy snacks and puzzles, she can go into the garden which is quite big and has food/water available
Is this normal? I don’t think my old dog was like this
She loves you. She can most likely know you’re irritated and anxious. She may be trying to figure out how to make you happy.
Certain dogs are more “biddable” and eager to please than others. Your previous dog wasn’t much. Here it is. You are her entire universe. Try to be charitable.
I’m not an expert, but this sounds like my Velcro dog. She is constantly with me when I am at home. I’ve taught her, unintentionally, that “lie down” means to relax. Once I’ve settled in anywhere for a time, I’ll gesture to her bed (she has one in each room) and issue the command. She will sit there and observe me for a long before dozing off, but as soon as I stand up, she springs to attention.
My dog also does this, and our behaviorist indicated she’s searching for advice on what to do next. Have you planned any enrichment activities for her? Is there a safe/resting area you can direct her to? I agree that those intense looks are disconcerting. This is a constant fight for us, but giving her something to do on her own has been beneficial.
Because eye command is so important to a successful relationship with your dog, there is actual training that teaches them this skill. I’d use it, not grumble about it. Find out what you can do with it.
My puppy does this at random throughout the day. Usually, when I give her a few pats, rubs, and kisses, she wanders away lol. I believe they, like us, crave a little attention from time to time.
I placed one of the dog beds in a quiet location with some rewards and will continue to hide food and toys in that area. Consider getting a second small dog to keep her company.
