We recently adopted a 4-month-old puppy a little over a month ago, and while he’s generally well-behaved, he has a habit of eating his own poop. Although it doesn’t happen every time, it occurs every few days. We’ve tried stopping raw carrot treats, punishment, and probiotics, but none have worked. He’s improving with house training and shows no signs of nutritional issues. I’m seeking advice on foods or methods to make his poop less appealing and would appreciate any suggestions.
Dogs often eat poop because they’re looking for more variety in their diet. You can try switching up his food by adding new flavors or making it tastier. You could also give him a little extra to ensure he’s not hungry, especially since he’s still growing.
We really try to offer a variety of meals. He loves his kibble, gets yogurt every day, enjoys a fair share of cheese and veggies, and receives plenty of treats without us overdoing it. I’m fortunate that he only eats as much kibble as he needs—sometimes just a few bites, other times the whole bowl—so we free-feed him. Since we’ve decided he’s turning 4 months old today, he’s getting half a baked sweet potato as a special treat. If you have any suggestions on other things we could try for his diet, I’m all ears!
If your dog is healthy, he might just enjoy eating poop. If the methods to make it taste worse don’t work, you’ll need to pick it up quickly. Training him to stop is possible, but it can be tricky since you’d have to be present every time he poops during the training process.
My dachshund is a consistent poop eater, and I think she does it to avoid getting in trouble when she poops in the house. Sometimes, I think my lab also eats it to cover for her.

Heh, I told my dogs “NO” until they finally understood that poop wasn’t food! They no longer see it that way.
Yo, Pineapple makes the poop straight-up nasty for dogs. Just throw some in his wet food and watch them stop feeding on poop.
You mean it works?! I’ve heard this before but never tried it.

Well, I need to get on this ASAP. My dogs really disgust me with that poop-eating behavior.
Yeah, just toss in two or three pineapple chunks with his food, the enzymes in it change the taste and smell of the poop, so he won’t wanna eat it anymore.
