I rescued Daq from a no-kill shelter just this Saturday. He’s 11 months old and pees and poops on a puppy pad. I walk him 6-7 times a day, but he’s only peed outside once. How do I get him to use the outdoors for potty breaks? Any advice would be really appreciated!
It sounds like Daq has developed a preference for the pads since that’s what he’s used to. Have you tried establishing a routine where you take him outside first thing in the morning, after playtime, and before bed?

Yeah, dogs usually need to go about 20 minutes after eating or drinking. If you catch him about to go inside, try clapping your hands to startle him, then take him outside!

I did this with my dog and it worked really well. I also gave him tons of praise and treats when he went outside, which helped him learn faster. Just be patient, it’ll take time!
Another trick I’ve used is a pheromone-treated stake in the yard. It helps attract the dog to a specific potty spot. Might be worth a try!

Ooh, I’ve seen those! Does it really work though? I might give it a go if it helps Daq learn where to go outside.

Yep, it worked wonders for my dog. They get used to the spot pretty quickly. Here’s a link to one I found helpful: Amazon.com : Simple Solution Pee Post Outdoor Potty Training Aid | Pheromone-Infused Yard Stake with GO HERE™ Technology | 13 Inch Stake : Simple Solution : Pet Food : Pet Supplies
I think it’s just gonna take some time for Daq to adjust. As long as you keep him on a routine and give him lots of praise when he does potty outside, he’ll get the hang of it. Just stay consistent!
Don’t stress too much about the accidents at first. Dogs get confused when they’re transitioning from indoor pads to outside, but with patience, he’ll learn where to go.

For sure! I’ve had my dog for months and we’re still working on it. It’s a slow process, but they get there!
You might also try signing him up for some dog training! A professional can help with specific behaviors like this. I’ve heard good things about it.
