How do I Overcome my Dog's anxiety?

We recently adopted a rescue dog 3 months ago, and he’s now 2 years old. At first, he only showed fear of thunder and rain, but over the last month, his anxiety has worsened. He’s now scared of rain sounds, dark skies, and planes. When afraid, he pants, drools, trembles, and won’t eat or listen. We’ve tried things like a thundershirt and desensitization, but nothing has worked. We’re considering going to a vet or behaviorist but are hesitant about medicating him. We’ll really appreciate any advice to help manage his anxiety.

Bro, you need to involve your vet on this. Usually, that much anxiety could be a medical condition.

Oh really?! I didn’t know anxiety is a medical condition. I’ll sure consult my vet about it. But could you know whether there is a way I can help him without medication? I am so skeptical about putting him on drugs at this young age.

But @Freya don’t you think it’s unfair to deny your dog help because you don’t want to put him on medication this early on in life? Do you mind sharing your reasons please?

There is entirely no need to fear medication especially if it could help reduce your dog’s fear/anxiety? Medication is meant to help both humans and animals. So if your dog suffers severe anxiety and it only seems to get worse, put him on meds. I am certain that’s the only way to improve his quality of life, I wouldn’t hesitate to use it.

Yeah right?? As an adult human who depends on anxiety meds to go about my life comfortably, I really feel for the poor dog. Please just put him on medication. Trust your vet to get him the best prescription and his life will be improved. As a fur baby owner, please don’t be selfish.

Oh, okay, maybe it’s my diction that’s wanting. I honestly didn’t know that anxiety is a medical condition. Please I am ready to learn as I am so new in this dog parenthood. I simply thought there could be a way to help minus meds. Now that I know better, I’ll sure book an appointment with my vet. Thank you so much

Thanks so much for your advise, I will certainly check in with my vet.
