How do I retrain my adult dog to stop peeing inside?

My dog had his first accident inside because I made the mistake of not taking him out for 3-4 hours, and then I fell asleep for 10 hours. Since then, he struggles to hold it, even for the usual 2-hour wait. Today, I took him out at 8:40 am, but when I came back at 11 am, he had peed inside. Sometimes he waits, but other times he just goes for it. I use an enzyme cleaner, but I’m not sure it’s working well enough. He always pees in the same spots in the kitchen, so at least it’s not everywhere. He tends to do this at least twice a week. After letting him out in the yard, I notice he still holds some pee. I know I need to take him for a walk in the neighborhood to help him mark and release. Any tips?

Have you seen a vet? It’s always a good idea to check if there’s a physical issue.

Yup, bladder infections (though less likely in males) and other issues are possible. But other than that, you could try training him the same way you would a puppy: no punishment, just a lot of praise and rewards when he goes outside.

Keep him on a leash indoors so he can’t go potty without supervision. Take him outside every hour on the hour and reward him heavily when he pees in the right spot.

Take him outside often, especially after eating, drinking, or getting excited. Be patient and reward him as soon as he goes.

You should definitely take him to the vet.

How old is he? Does he show signs of arthritis, bladder stones, or even dementia? Did he start any new medications or foods?

He’s 3 years old. No new meds or food. He seems fine and doesn’t seem to be in any pain when he pees.

@manu
Hmm, it could be bladder crystals. It might be worth getting him checked by a vet.
