Hi everyone…
I recently got a new puppy, and I’m struggling a bit with leash training. Does anyone have tips or methods they’ve used successfully to train their dog to walk nicely on a leash?
I began by putting her out in the backyard, off-leash, and simply wandering around. When she approached me, I gave her a treat, complimented her, and continued walking.
You should both enjoy your training, begin by teaching your dog or puppy to walk on a leash using the recommended method known as “loose-leash walking.” This can be accomplished by rewarding your dog every few steps with delicious goodies when they walk on the leash without pulling and carrying on with the walk.
I ended up learning how to use prong collars properly and my walks are now 90% without much issues.
I found Garrett Wing’s course very useful.
Can go for an hour long walk with my Beagle without any pull, zero corrections. The prong made it very clear to him what was acceptable and what was not.
The method he teaches and prong has been very helpful, I used to dread walking with constant pulls and zooming around, came close to hurting my wrist few times as well. For few months I had a hyper active hunting puppy destroying things inside since he wasn’t getting great exercise or walks. Going on long walks has really helped both of us.
I also noticed that he is slowly learning to walk without prong as well, his walks without prong have also improved quite a bit.
