Hey guys, so my dog Shera has been barking a lot at night, like multiple times. I think it’s because she hears stuff outside, but I’m not sure. I’ve tried putting a few fans in the room to add some white noise, but it hasn’t really helped much. She’s a 3-year-old Shepherd, and I adopted her just two weeks ago. Anyone else deal with this? What worked for you?
I totally get it! My dog used to do that too, but he settled after a while. Shera might still be adjusting to her new environment. I’d suggest maybe giving her more training and mental exercise during the day, that could help her calm down at night.

Yeah, I think she’s still getting used to everything. I’ve been taking her on lots of walks, but she still barks. I’ll try adding some playtime to wear her out more, though!

Good idea! Tug of war and fetch can help a lot. Even if she’s not into it at first, it can build her confidence and make her less reactive at night.
I had the same issue with my dog! It took him a while to adjust. I would recommend keeping her in another room with the door shut for now, just so she doesn’t get rewarded for barking when you let her out.
@DolphGabbana
Oh, so not letting her out when she barks is key? I’ll try that for sure. Thanks for the tip!
Yep, sounds like she just needs more time to adjust. But if it keeps up, you might want to think about training her with a collar or something. It’s helped my dog a lot with his barking.

I was wondering about the collar thing. But I don’t want to rush into it. I’m guessing it’s best to do it once she’s a little more settled, right?

Yeah, you don’t want to just correct the behavior without addressing the root cause. It’s all about building her confidence and trust first.
I’ve heard that some dogs bark more when they’re in a new place, especially if they’re on edge. I think giving her time and consistency will make a big difference. Also, making sure she’s worn out physically and mentally should help with the barking.
@JamesHenry
Thanks! Yeah, I think she’s still adjusting. I’ve been doing a lot of walking, but I’ll try adding more mental stimulation too.
I dealt with this with my dog for a while. It was really just a mix of her adjusting and me not managing the barking well at first. But consistency and patience really helped, and I also tried using toys that didn’t allow her to nip at my hand so much.
@Ronald1
Yeah, I noticed she’s been nipping more when we play. I’ll try switching up the toys to something better for that!
