Is it appropriate to strike your dog for misbehaving? PSA: Refrain from doing so!

The amount of postings that I’ve read in the last day or so where individuals mention hitting their dog in passing while ranting or seeking help.

IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO HIT DOGS. Abusing your dog by hitting them is wrong.

It truly amazes me that this needs to be mentioned.

DO NOT HIT YOUR DOGS, PLEASE.

Give them the right instruction. Reinforcement that is positive is effective.

Never hit or yell at your dog for not behaving or not understanding a command. Dogs don’t understand the idea of punishment like we do. If you yell at or hit your dog, they might become scared or anxious around you.

Not at all. Not at all. Never. Not at all. If you really don’t want to fuck up some types of dogs, hurting them is the worst thing you can do. Want to make something scary? Do something to your dog. Want to make a mess of submission that pisses itself? Do something to your dog. They don’t get the punishment, and you don’t teach them anything. Don’t do it. Never.

Haha, calm down, do not go overboard. Dogs constantly growl, nip, and fight with one another over food, toys, people, and other things. It probably was not a horrific event. Though you probably did not damage the dog, it is obvious that punching is not an appropriate method of correction.

In order to prevent resource guarding in the future, work on teaching your dog a firm drop command and acclimating her to you taking food from her.
