Leash Keeps Coming Off… Any Safer Options?

I’ve been using the gentle leader with my dog, and it’s honestly been amazing for walks.

But, there’s a problem - the clasp on my leash keeps coming undone when my dog shakes, especially in the rain. It’s a Kong leash, only a few months old, but my dog has managed to get off it three times already. I’m terrified this could happen at a really bad time.

I’ve tried different directions to clip it, but I’m not sure if it’s the clasp hitting against something or if my dog shakes with so much force it pops open.

Anyone know of any good double-locking leashes? Looking for something that’s about 4 feet long and strong enough that I don’t have to worry. I’ve seen cool climbing carabiners that lock, so I’m surprised this isn’t more common in dog leashes. My favorite climbing carabiner even has magnets and needs to be pressed on both sides to unlock – no way a dog could do that accidentally.

Check out Wilderdog. They make leashes with locking carabiners, and they’re pretty sturdy.

Sounds like you need to make and sell a leash with that feature. Just an idea.

Haha, take the idea and run with it. Just send me a free leash if you do.

Haha, deal.

You might want to check out Litto Howler. They use climbing rope and carabiners, and their Ekko or Kouten leashes might be exactly what you’re looking for. I have two of their leashes, and they’ve held up well so far.

@wonderg
I make my own leashes with similar materials. They’re really tough and reliable.

Do you sell them? I’d be interested in buying one if you do.

I tried selling them for $10 each, but people thought it was too much. Now I just make them for myself.

I have a leash that you have to twist and push in to open. It’s from Feel Active. Not sure if it’s available everywhere, but it’s super secure.

Locking carabiners on leashes are so rare, which is frustrating because they’d be so useful. I ended up getting a custom biothane leash from an Etsy seller who added a locking carabiner for me. BioDogDesigns did it, and it works great.

This is the carabiner I use now, and it’s the best I’ve found so far: Carabiner Link

I haven’t had issues with any of my leashes, but if you want to try something new, I recommend these:

There are a bunch of locking leashes out there. Not sure if there’s one with a magnet, but wouldn’t be surprised.

This one on Amazon might interest you: Enthusiast Gear Carabiner Leash

If you have a climbing-grade magnetron, you could maybe swap it onto a regular leash.

Nonstop Dogwear makes a leash with a twist-lock carabiner. They also make a lot of other gear if your dog’s into sports.

ZeeDog leashes come with screw-lock ‘super hooks’. Really solid and very secure, if you’re looking for reliability.

We had the same issue, and I ended up getting a carabiner style leash from Amazon. Works perfectly: Carabiner Style Leash

Love the gentle leader too. Never had it come undone, though. Maybe a different leash would help?

I use the Knot-a-Leash from Ruffwear. Has a locking carabiner and feels really solid.
