Hey everyone, my 40 lb dog got into one of my protein bars about 4 hours ago. The bar is 40g and has a chocolate-flavored coating and some semi-sweet chocolate chips. I know chocolate can be bad for dogs, but it wasn’t a lot, and the rest of the ingredients seem non-toxic (like peanuts, soya, and almonds). Should I be concerned or just keep an eye on him? He seems fine so far. Any advice?
You’re probably okay since it’s a small amount. Chocolate toxicity depends on the type of chocolate and the dog’s weight. Dark chocolate is worse than milk chocolate. Keep an eye on him for vomiting or diarrhea, though.

Exactly! Dark and baking chocolates have way more theobromine, which is the toxic part. Sounds like your bar didn’t have much.
Yeah, I think you’re fine. My vet told me mild toxicity starts at 0.3 oz of chocolate per pound of body weight. Your bar only had about 1.4 oz total, and not all of that was chocolate.

Exactly. At worst, you might see some mild stomach upset. Just keep an eye out for anything unusual.
If you’re worried, you could call your vet or a pet poison hotline for peace of mind. But honestly, it doesn’t sound serious.

FYI, my dog ate part of a chocolate cake once (don’t ask lol). He just had diarrhea for a day. Yours should be fine with such a small amount.

Lol same here. My dog once ate a chocolate chip cookie, and the vet said not to stress unless it’s a big amount.
The ingredients don’t seem super harmful. Just make sure your dog isn’t acting lethargic or restless. Those can be signs of trouble.
