My dog has been suddenly aggressive on walks... anyone else dealt with this?

So my 2-year-old South African Boerboel, Zaire, has started being aggressive on walks out of nowhere. He’s never had any issues before, but he’s bitten two people recently. Once it was at home when he got accidentally cornered, and the other time was when a stranger tried petting him. I’m really worried about this sudden change in behavior. Has anyone dealt with something similar? What do I do?

Wow, that’s concerning. My dog had a similar issue where he bit someone when he felt cornered. It was definitely a fear thing. How does Zaire act when you’re getting ready for the walk?

He’s usually calm, but I’ve been a little anxious lately, so maybe that’s affecting him?

Oof, sounds tough. Boerboels are known to be protective, so it could just be a territorial thing. Did the stranger approach him too suddenly?

Yeah, the stranger came straight at him and put his hand over his head. I didn’t think that would bother him.

I’ve heard that dogs like Zaire can react out of fear if they feel trapped. Maybe some training on boundaries would help? Have you tried desensitizing him to strangers?

Not really, I’ve been mainly focusing on the walks. Should I be doing more with him around strangers?

Yeah, maybe work on letting strangers approach slowly and giving him space. Also, stay calm yourself—it helps them stay calm too.

Sounds like a fear-based response, especially with the corner incident. Have you noticed if he’s been more protective around the house too?

Not really, he’s been fine at home. It’s only when we’re out on walks or in public.

Try working on some obedience training, it could help build his confidence. Also, some Boerboels get more territorial as they mature. Could be that too.

Yeah, I’m definitely going to focus on training. Thanks for the advice!
