I have an 8-month-old Golden Retriever who’s always been a picky eater. She used to eat well when she was younger, but now she refuses to eat her food from her bowl and will only eat treats all day long.
I am concerned because she’s still growing and needs to get proper nutrition. I am looking for advice on how to get her to eat her regular food and establish better eating habits. Has anyone dealt with this issue or have any tips to help her start eating her meals again?
Feed according to a timetable. After twenty minutes, whether she eats it or not, pick up the food. Until she learns to consume her food, there will be no more goodies. She may not feel hungry for a day or two, but eventually she will eat. She refuses to let hunger win.
Refrain from giving in and giving her human food, treats, or new food brands. If you do, she’ll realize that you’ll always go get her something better if she persists.
All of this is supposing that she is in good condition and that no illnesses, such as allergies or digestive problems, are present. Consult a veterinarian immediately if there are any indications of a physical issue.
Dogs enjoy variety (try a different brand or taste), and switching up their meal might benefit them because different protein and vegetable sources offer different nutrients.
