My Puppy Isn't Responding to Toilet Training

Hello, I’m reaching out because I’m having a tough time with my puppy and toilet training. I’ve tried all the usual methods—taking him out frequently, using positive reinforcement when he goes outside, and even using puppy pads inside. But he just doesn’t seem to get it!

He’s a 4-month-old Golden Retriever, and it feels like nothing is working. He often has accidents indoors, even after I take him out. I’m getting a bit frustrated and worried that I’m not doing something right.

Has anyone else faced this issue? What worked for you? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

Hi there! Toilet training a puppy can indeed be challenging, especially with a young Golden Retriever who might still be figuring things out. Consistency is key—continue taking him out frequently, particularly after meals, playtime, and naps. Praise and reward him immediately when he goes outside. If he has accidents indoors, clean them thoroughly to remove any lingering scent that might attract him back to the same spot. Consider using a crate when you can’t supervise him, as dogs generally avoid soiling their sleeping area. Patience is crucial, as every puppy learns at their own pace. You might also consult with a professional trainer for personalized advice. Keep at it, and don’t get discouraged—he’ll get there!

Hi! It’s tough when training doesn’t seem to stick. Make sure you’re consistent with your routine and supervising him closely indoors. Sometimes, using a crate can help with training as dogs generally avoid soiling their sleeping area.

It is far too early for you to have these expectations for your puppy. A dog needs four to six months to become completely housebroken, while smaller breeds may require up to a year. I understand that using puppy pads is not beneficial. In fact, it teaches them that entering the house is OK. On this subject, a tonne of information is available online. Read it everything and give your small man some leeway.
