We have a 9-month-old female King Charles Spaniel. She keeps running out of the house, down our quarter-mile driveway, and even crosses a busy street! We’re worried she might get hurt. We’re also planning to have her spayed next week, but I’m not sure how to stop this behavior. Any tips or training suggestions?
I had a similar problem with my pup. The best thing we did was train her to sit by the door before opening it. That way, she wouldn’t just run out. We started with a leash to guide her, and it worked pretty well!

I’ve been thinking about doing that too! How long did it take for your dog to stop darting out once she learned?

It took a couple of weeks of consistent practice, but she eventually got the hang of it. The key is to stay consistent and patient. It’ll be worth it!
I also used an invisible fence system for the driveway, and it worked wonders. My dog used to run out into traffic too, but she stopped after we set up the fence.

Does that invisible fence really work? I’ve heard mixed things about it. Any tips on how to get it set up?
@GeorgeMiller
Yeah, it works really well if you make sure to follow the instructions carefully. Start with the training flags and make sure your dog gets used to the area before turning it on. It took a few days for my dog to learn her boundaries.
If she’s not fixed yet, the running might be because she’s searching for mates. But I’d definitely try the door sit method first and keep her on a leash for safety.

Oh, that makes sense. My dog was acting the same way before we got her spayed. But the sit method sounds good for now.
The sit at the door idea sounds great. I would also recommend practicing the sit command in other parts of the house too, so she learns that it’s not just a door thing. It could help with impulse control overall.
I’d also try some positive reinforcement when she stays inside or behaves well near the door. Give her treats or praise when she doesn’t try to run out.
