I have two female dogs, Remy (a 7-year-old Yorkie, 8lbs) and Stella (a 3-year-old Chorkie, 19lbs). Over the last year, they’ve gone from growling and snapping at each other to having full-on fights that sometimes happen out of nowhere. My family and I have had to physically separate them multiple times, and it’s been really stressful. A trainer told us it might be jealousy or a fight for dominance since our Pomeranian, who used to be the top dog, passed away. They suggested keeping them apart and monitoring them closely, but it’s not a sustainable way to live. I’m really at a loss and unsure what to do next. Rehoming is a last resort because shelters are full, and I’m worried about finding a good home. Any advice?
Have you tried consulting a vet or a veterinary behaviorist? Sometimes medical issues can cause aggression, especially in older dogs.

Not yet, but that’s a good idea. I wonder if Remy’s age has something to do with her getting crabby.
@DawgFella
It could be! A check-up might help rule out pain or other health issues causing her irritability.
You mentioned a trainer before—did they talk about counterconditioning or desensitization? That might help improve their relationship.

The trainer mostly suggested keeping them apart and stopping circling behavior, but it hasn’t helped much long-term.
@DawgFella
You might need a more structured approach with rewards for calm behavior. A trainer specializing in aggression could help.
Are there specific triggers for the fights, like certain times of day or activities?

It’s hard to say. Sometimes it’s when they’re outside, like when someone comes to the fence. Other times, it’s random.
@DawgFella
It sounds like they’re reacting to external stimuli. Maybe managing those triggers with leashes or gates could help prevent fights.
Have you tried calming aids like pheromone diffusers or anxiety wraps? They might reduce tension in your home.

I haven’t, but I’ve heard of them. Do you have a brand you’d recommend?
@DawgFella
Adaptil diffusers work for some dogs. It’s worth a shot, especially if they seem on edge a lot.
Since rehoming is a last resort, maybe look into breed-specific rescues if it comes to that. They can help find good homes.

Thanks. I’m really hoping to avoid that, but it’s good to know there are options if needed.
