Need help training my pup to walk on a leash… any advice?

We just got a new puppy, and walking her has been a nightmare. She pulls like crazy, and nothing I’ve tried is working. In the past, I had success using treats or stopping when they pull, but this time, no luck. I also don’t have as much time as I did with my previous dogs.

Does anyone have good leash training tips? Also, how do you find a trainer who doesn’t charge a fortune or require boarding? Is the PetSmart training program worth trying, or is it a waste of money?

I don’t have the time

Training a puppy takes consistency, even if it’s just a little bit each day. It’s tough, but that’s part of having a dog.

Any tips on training her on a leash?

This is what worked for me, or you can check out my comment here.

Board and train programs

Most of them use methods that can do more harm than good in the long run, so I wouldn’t recommend them.

Is PetSmart’s training worth it?

Most people don’t recommend it, but it really depends on the trainer you get.

@Dija
I meant that I don’t have as much time as I did with my other dogs.

@Dija
The comment about needing time comes across as kind of dismissive. If someone realizes they need to put in more time than they expected, would your advice be to quit their job or rehome the dog? Or would it be more helpful to suggest ways to train efficiently with limited time? I’m just pointing it out because some people shut down when they feel judged instead of helped.

That’s a really good point. I’ll keep that in mind when responding to people in the future. Thanks for the feedback.

I appreciate you being open to it! :blush:

There’s a section on this forum that explains how to find a trainer.

Try to look for someone certified through KPA, IAABC, or CCPDT. They all have directories you can check.

If your pup is still new to your home, give it some time. The first few weeks can be the hardest because you’re both figuring things out.

Group classes are usually the best value for your money. When talking to a trainer, ask questions like:

  • What do you do if my dog gets something wrong?
  • How do you handle confused owners?
  • Are you insured?

@Joseph
Thank you! That’s really helpful!

Also, PetSmart and Petco training can be hit or miss. If it’s your only option, it’s not necessarily a bad choice, but definitely talk to the trainer first and ask lots of questions.

If you can, watch a class and see how the trainer interacts with both the dogs and the owners. Look for positive reinforcement and avoid places like Sit Means Sit, Off-Leash K9, or Bark Busters.

It sounds like you’re asking about leash training. You might find this guide helpful.
