I have 4 dogs, all similar in size. My newest rescue, a 2-year-old mini Aussie, joined us in November 2023. She’s got some quirks—like barking at people until they sit down and resource guarding me by body-blocking and barking. She’s not aggressive toward me, but there was an incident where she jumped on my oldest dog, a 16-year-old Corgi mix, during what seemed like a misunderstanding. It scared my older dog, and they fought. My older dog ended up with a deep bite but is healing under vet care. I’d love advice on reintroducing them safely next week once the stitches are out. Will they remember the fight? Is a board and train program worth it for my Aussie? Any tips are appreciated!
It sounds like your Aussie is feeling insecure. Have you tried using a leash during their interactions to keep things calm?

Not yet, but I plan to use a leash for their first few meetings next week. Hopefully, it’ll help keep things under control.
Do you think the jumping was play that went wrong? Sometimes dogs don’t know their own strength.

It’s possible. She can be a bit jealous when I’m giving attention to the other dogs, so it might’ve been that too.

That makes sense. Maybe keep interactions short at first and gradually build up their time together.
I’ve heard good things about the ‘Nothing in Life is Free’ approach. It might help her feel less possessive over you.

I’ll look into that. It sounds like it could help her feel more secure and understand boundaries better.

Definitely! It’s all about showing her you’re in charge so she doesn’t feel the need to take control.
Board and train can work, but only if you follow up with consistent training at home. Have you found a trainer you trust?

I’ve been interviewing trainers. Still deciding, but I want someone who focuses on positive reinforcement.
How’s your older dog doing? Sounds like she’s been through a lot. Hope she’s healing well.

She’s doing better, thanks! Her stitches come out Monday, and she’s been resting in a quiet room to recover.

Glad to hear that. Taking it slow with reintroductions will definitely help her feel more comfortable.
