Transitioning adult dog from sleeping in a crate to free roaming

My 9-month-old Shiba Inu currently sleeps in his crate at night. I’m wondering how to transition him to free-roaming at night, as my primary concern is him finding something to chew or destroy while we sleep. He’s calming down from excessive chewing since being neutered, but I’m unsure of the best approach and timing.

I plan to wait until he’s more settled, then move his crate from the living room to our bedroom. Once he’s used to sleeping in the bedroom, I’ll start letting him roam just the bedroom. Right now, he barks at night wanting to explore the rest of the apartment. Ideally, I’d like him to stay in the bedroom first and gradually work up to roaming more freely.

To transition your dog from a crate to free roaming, follow these steps:

  1. Create a Safe Area: Set up a room or space with no harmful items and close windows to reduce distractions.
  2. Provide Distractions: Give your dog a toy or treat to keep them occupied when you leave.
  3. Take It Slow: Start with short periods of freedom and gradually increase time alone.

Begin this process when your dog is mature, around 12-24 months.

I wouldn’t assume that she is going to want to sleep in your bed with you. Some dogs do and some don’t.

You could try those donut beds next to your bed or inside her crate and see how you go. If you start with it in her crate you could gradually move it out from her crate.
