What are the basics of starting my dog in agility training?

I recently adopted a high-energy border collie and want to channel her energy positively. I’ve heard agility training is great for dogs like her, but I’m unsure where to start. What are the basics of starting my dog in agility training, and what equipment do I need? I’m looking for advice on essential gear and initial training steps. Any tips would be appreciated!

Congrats on your new border collie, For agility training, start simple. You don’t need fancy gear right away—think tunnels, cones, and jumps. Begin with basic commands and positive reinforcement. Maybe get a few fun toys and treats to keep her motivated. Gradually introduce her to each obstacle, and remember to keep it playful. My collie loved this, and it turned our backyard into an adventure zone.

Here are the basics to start your dog in agility training:

  1. Start Early: Begin training when your dog is around 12 months old.
  2. Build Focus: Practice exercises that improve your dog’s concentration.
  3. Teach Movement: Train your dog to move away from your side and navigate around objects.
  4. Balance Training: Help your dog get comfortable on unstable surfaces.
  5. Practice Low Jumps: Start with low jumps to build confidence.
  6. Use a Pause Table: Train your dog to stay still on a designated spot.
  7. Introduce Weave Poles Last: They require advanced skills, so tackle these later.
  8. Stay Positive: Use treats and praise to encourage your dog.

One thing I wish I had taught my dogs earlier is a specific command for staying on either side of me. On the course, you need to switch sides frequently. I trained my dogs to always heel on the left, so after coming out of a tunnel or crossing a bridge, they often go to my left, even when I need them on the other side.
