I noticed a limp in my dog and examined his paw; could it be a problem with his quickness or something?
I can’t tell from the picture.
Several questions: Were the nails cut recently? Have you seen the dog licking or gnawing on this nail? Is it conceivable that the nail got stuck and ripped?
No, I spotted him walking slowly on a stroll one day and the limp started the next. There was no licking or gnawing, and I don’t know if he struck it anywhere. It’s mending up, but the limps are still there. I’ll try to take a clearer picture.
It appears that a portion of the nail has broken off, possibly during rough play or a walk, exposing the quick. It could explain the limping, as it most likely hurts when he puts weight on it, and debris from the ground could be getting in there and hurting it. I would recommend submitting those photos to your veterinarian just to be sure. They may offer you some antibiotic ointment to use there.
Yes, something happened, and yes, I phoned the vet about it last Sunday. They said if nothing improved by Monday, make an appointment, and I put vetericen on it, but that was it.
I urge that you send those images to your veterinarian, or that you bring the dog in to have him examined. To be honest, I don’t see anything wrong with the photo, but you can see what it doesn’t reveal.
One thing…do not put anything on the paw. If your veterinarian gives you something to put on it, that’s one thing. However, never use anything on your dog unless prescribed or approved by a veterinarian. Whatever you put on it will be licked off, and many substances are highly dangerous.
They recommended to make an appointment on Monday if it didn’t get better. This happened last Sunday, and I put veteracin on it, but that’s all! Thank you for your opinion!
