Why did my dog snap at my friend's puppy... anyone know?

My dog Willow (she’s a mixed breed - bull terrier, pitbull, catahoula leopard, plott hound, coonhound) growled and snapped at my friend’s puppy for no clear reason. She’s usually good with dogs, but this one really threw me off. Anyone have advice or know why she did this? She’s 21 months old and this is the first time I’ve seen this behavior. I’m confused because she’s usually fine with other dogs. I’d love to get some insight from you all.

That sounds so weird! My dog has snapped at puppies before too, especially if they’re too playful. Maybe Willow was just in a mood or felt overwhelmed?

It could be health-related. You mentioned she’s been treated for giardia recently… maybe that’s affecting her mood?

It sounds like she was confused about the puppy’s energy. I’ve seen dogs act like that when they get too excited or don’t know how to react. Have you tried reintroducing them slowly?

Have you thought about getting her temperament tested? It sounds like Willow might be going through some changes. Maybe it’s just her age, but it could also be health-related. I’d suggest seeing a trainer or vet.

If she’s normally good with cats and children, then I bet this is just a weird phase or some stress. Maybe try giving her more space when meeting new dogs for now.
