Hey, I have a rehomed dog who’s been with us for almost 4 weeks now. When I’m home, he’s totally fine with my husband – he even lays with him on the couch and plays. But when I’m not around, he growls at him. It’s weird because the first week he was actually afraid of him, but now he’s fine when I’m there. Any ideas on what’s going on and how I can help him feel more comfortable with my husband when I’m gone?
I think it’s probably just insecurity. Your dog hasn’t had much exposure to men before, right? He might just feel safer when you’re around because you’re his comfort zone.

Yeah, that makes sense. My dog was like that too when we first got him. He’d only relax around my wife. Took a while to adjust, but he’s way better now.
Sounds like he just needs more time. When I had a similar issue, I let my partner feed the dog and just kind of left them alone to bond. It helped a lot with trust!

That’s a good idea! I’m gonna try having my husband feed him more. Maybe that will help them build a positive connection.
I agree with the insecurity thing. Maybe your husband could do some low-key stuff like leash walks with the dog? Not forcing interactions but just letting him get used to being around him. That could help!
@Woof
I think that’s really important. It’s kind of like giving the dog space to get comfortable. Definitely wouldn’t force anything.
It sounds like he just hasn’t learned to trust your husband without you there. I’d recommend doing some fun playtime with him – like fetch or tug – to build confidence and show that your husband’s not a threat.
@Flippa
Yeah, I’ll give that a shot. Buddha does love playing fetch, so maybe this will help! Thanks for the tip!
I had a similar problem with my dog, and it took a lot of consistent effort. Just be patient and keep showing your dog that your husband is safe. Eventually, they’ll get there!

Good to know! Patience is key, I guess. It’s just tough when they’re still acting scared or growling.
