Hello guys, I am looking to get into agility training for myself and my dog, and I would love any information you can share.
A bit about us: I have a 60 lb, 2-year-old female Black Mouth Cur named Ember. We hike regularly, but with recent changes in the cycling community and a lack of foot traffic-only trails nearby, I’m seeking a new way to exercise her. Ember is a playful pup who loves running, climbing, and walking on downed trees, so agility seems like a great fit. She knows basic commands like sit, down, stay, come, and some mushing commands (gee, haw, on by).
Where should I start? Are there agility training locations in SE Michigan, specifically in Macomb or Oakland County? Also, are there any specific commands or training that would be beneficial before we begin?
I see you’ve received some great advice on training and prep, so I’ll focus on recommendations for agility classes. While I train in Central Ohio and mostly compete locally, I grew up in Oakland County and have some familiarity with the area.
Here are three agility training facilities in Michigan that I recommend, based on feedback from agility friends:
TNT Dog Center (Midland)
Ann Arbor Dog Training Club (Whitmore Lake)
All Dogs Can (Lapeer)
These places offer classes and host agility trials, making them great options if you’re interested in competing. I wouldn’t recommend venues with rubber floors, as they can be slippery for dogs.
If these options don’t work for you, reach out to them for additional suggestions. Agility communities are generally friendly and helpful to newcomers.
Look into dog training facilities in your area on Google, find out what local events your agility club hosts, and find out where they meet, practise, and train.
It is likely best for you to locate an agility club or organisation and begin with them. To provide guidance on what to do, they will be able to assess the situation at which both you and your dog are.
