Anyone else have a dog who refuses to go in their own yard?

I’ve got a chocolate lab cross named Jenni, and she won’t do her business in our fenced backyard. I’ve had her for 6 months now (she’s a rescue) and she lived outdoors her whole life before that. She’s about to turn 3 in December, but this issue has been going on since I got her. Anyone have any advice on how to get her to use the yard? I’m really dreading walking her in -45 weather… :sweat_smile:

Oof, I feel that! My dog was the same at first, but it just took some time and patience. I started using a command like ‘potty’ every time I took her out, and gave her tons of praise and treats when she went. Eventually, she caught on.

That sounds like a good idea! Does it really work though? My dog is so stubborn…

Yeah, it took a little while, but it did work! Just be super consistent with it, and eventually, they make the connection. It might take a few weeks though, don’t get discouraged!

Have you tried using one of those dog attractant sprays? I used one on my dog, and it totally helped him understand where to go. You can find them at most pet stores, or even Amazon.

I didn’t even know those existed! Where can I get one? :see_no_evil:

Here’s a link to one on Amazon: OUT! PetCare Go Here Attractant Spray Bottle for Pets, 32-Ounce : Amazon.ca: Pet Supplies. I used it for a while, and it helped a lot!

Another idea is to use a treadmill. You can get Jenni some exercise indoors during the brutal winters. Just make sure to go slow if she’s not used to it. My dog loves it!

We actually have one! I’m just trying to avoid walking her in the dark since I’m night blind. I guess the treadmill might help a bit though!

@Nicolethomas
That makes sense. Maybe just focus on using the treadmill and occasional walks during the day. Hopefully that’ll make it easier for you both in winter!

I had the same issue with my dog, and after a while, it really did get better. I’d suggest a mix of patience, praise, and trying to make the backyard a more inviting space. Keep us posted!

I think getting a dog attractant spray could help, plus sticking to the potty command. If all else fails, keep trying, and eventually she’ll get it! :blush:
