We recently adopted a Mountain Doodle named Nellie, and she’s been so anxious around us, even the kids. She refuses walks now because she’s scared of people. It’s gotten so bad that even when my family members get up to go to the bathroom, she growls and barks. Anyone else’s dog act like this? I’m worried about how to help her, especially since it’s only been a few days since we brought her home.
Aww, poor thing. Sounds like she’s having a rough time adjusting. My dog was like that too when we first got her. It’s a process for sure.

Yeah, same here. It took about a month before she really settled in. I’d suggest giving her space to adjust and be patient.
I’ve heard that dogs sometimes need like 3 weeks to settle into a new home. Try sticking to a routine so she knows what to expect every day. It’ll help her feel more secure.

That’s reassuring, I guess we just need to be patient and not push her too hard. Hoping it gets better soon.
I’m curious, did you get her from a breeder or shelter? Some dogs can have anxiety because of past trauma or just their breed temperament.

We got her from a breeder. She seemed totally fine when we met her, so this behavior is really surprising.
Have you tried using a crate? Sometimes dogs feel safer in a crate if they’re not in a panic mode. You could try feeding her in there to make it a positive space.

I tried that, but she just cries in there. I was wondering if covering the crate would help her feel more calm.
@Oliver
Yeah, covering the crate might work, especially if you leave the door open. Just make it a chill spot where she can feel safe.
I’ve read that some dogs do fine in quieter environments but get really anxious in busy homes with kids. Is she maybe struggling with the noise and activity around her?

That’s exactly what I’m worried about. She gets really jumpy when my kids come home or even when they move around the house.
