I want to try to figure out my dog’s temperament. He’s a Goldendoodle, 1 year and 1 month old, named Benji. When he’s in the backyard, he barks at people walking by, pulls during leash walks, and barks at other dogs on the leash. He also seems really anxious with unexpected noises. I’ve noticed it’s been worse since he got neutered… anyone else deal with similar changes?
Sounds like Benji might be feeling a little more on edge after the neuter. My dog acted the same way. It can mess with their confidence for a bit. Have you tried any calming techniques?

Yeah, he’s definitely a bit more anxious. I’ve tried some calming treats, but not much help yet. Do you have any suggestions?

Maybe try doing some behavior training with him to help redirect his anxiety? I heard it works better than meds for some dogs.
Totally get it! My dog was super anxious after his neuter too. He started pulling on the leash more and barking at everything. It might just take time for him to settle down.

That’s good to hear it settled for your dog. I’m just trying to figure out how long it might take to get back to normal.

It took about a month for my dog to chill out a bit, so hopefully Benji will be the same. But it’s definitely a bit of a process.
It could be a hormonal thing. I’ve read that neutering affects a dog’s anxiety levels, especially in breeds like Goldendoodles. Maybe give him some space and consistency while he adjusts.

I’m hoping he’ll settle soon. I’ve been giving him some space, but he’s still nervous around new things. Do you think it’ll get better with time?

Yeah, it usually takes a while for their hormones to balance out. Just try to be consistent with how you handle him. He should get more comfortable once his hormones settle down.
Benji’s behavior change might also be related to his temperament. Some dogs are naturally more anxious or fearful, and neutering could’ve amplified that. Have you noticed if he’s more anxious about specific situations?
@Kajol
Definitely more anxious with new noises, and he’s even been barking more at other dogs. It’s been a bit much lately.

That sounds like anxiety to me. Maybe try some training to help him feel more secure, or ask your vet about calming options?
I’ve heard that post-neutering, some dogs just need more time to adjust. The good news is, once his hormones balance, he might get back to his usual self. Just keep him calm and consistent!

Thanks for the advice! I’ll be patient with him and keep him consistent. Hopefully he’ll get back to his old self soon!
