Anyone else’s dog start licking the floor... what’s going on?

My dog has recently started licking the floor, his bed, and even the carpet. He’s on Cytopoint and Apoquel 5.4 because he usually chews and licks his paws. Anyone know if this could be related to his meds or something else?

Hey, my dog was doing something similar! Have you changed his food recently? Sometimes a diet switch can mess with their stomachs.

Yeah, we recently switched his food from duck to chicken, then went to fish (salmon). Do you think that could be it?

@Ethan
Definitely could be! Changing food too fast can make them feel nauseous. Maybe try Pepcid? It’s over-the-counter and can help settle his stomach.

What’s Pepcid? :thinking:

Oh, it’s just a basic stomach acid reducer. It’s safe for dogs, and you can grab it at any grocery store or pharmacy. Helps with nausea.

Is he an older dog? My senior dog started licking random things when he developed some digestive issues. Age can definitely be a factor.

Yeah, he’s 15 now. Do you think his age could be making him feel off? We’ve also wondered if he might be happier with a companion dog.

@Ethan
At 15, it could be his liver or kidneys causing some nausea. Maybe ask a vet about it? As for a companion, I’d say focus on his health first. A new dog might stress him out.

Our dog’s vet mentioned that licking the floor can sometimes mean nausea. Meds can mess with their stomachs too. How long has he been on the Cytopoint and Apoquel?

He’s been on those meds for a while now. But the licking just started like 5 days ago.

@Ethan
Gotcha, so probably not the meds alone. Could be the recent food switch or even a mild stomach bug.

Honestly, I’d try the Pepcid. My dog was licking weird stuff too when he had an upset stomach. This should help, especially with a recent diet change.

Thanks! I’ll give it a shot. Hopefully, it helps settle his stomach.

A friend’s dog did this after switching to fish-based food. Maybe ease him into the new diet slowly, mixing with the old food?

Good idea. I might have rushed the switch a bit. I’ll try mixing it back in.
