Anyone else’s puppy scared of the harness?

I recently got a 5-month-old puppy, and we’ve been trying to get him ready for walks by putting his harness and lead on. He seems really scared and just freezes up, even when we praise him and give him treats. IDK what to do… has anyone else experienced this? Any tips would be super helpful.

Yeah, my pup was the same way. It took a bit of time, but I just let him wear the harness around the house without the lead first. It helped him get used to it.

That’s a good idea. I never thought of doing it inside first.

How long did it take for your pup to get used to it?

@dianastriver
It took a couple of days. Just keep it chill and don’t force it.

I’ve dealt with this too. I found that using a really tasty treat helped distract him. Maybe try that?

What kind of treats worked for you?

Oh, just some soft training treats. He loves those. :yum:

I just let my pup explore the harness on his own terms. He’d sniff it and eventually got curious enough to wear it.

That sounds smart. I think letting them explore helps a lot.

If all else fails, maybe try a different type of harness. Some are less intimidating than others.

Good tip. I’ve seen ones that look more comfortable.

Oh, and remember to stay patient. It can take time for them to get used to it.

Yeah, I’m trying to remind myself that. It’s tough though.
