Anyone know how to get my dog to sit on command?

Hey all, I’ve got a new rescue dog named Skylar, and I’m trying to teach her the ‘sit’ command. I know I’m doing something wrong because she keeps jumping 2-3 times before she finally sits. She’s super eager, but I just can’t seem to get through to her. Anyone have any tips or tricks to help with this? I’d appreciate it!

Sounds like she’s just excited! Maybe try using a treat to lure her into position? That worked with my dog! Hold the treat close to her nose, then move it slowly upward and back to get her to sit. It helps a lot!

Ooh I’ll give that a shot! I’ve been using treats, but I think I might be rushing it too much. Thanks for the tip!

You can also try marking the behavior with a word like ‘yes’ right before giving her the treat. That way she starts to associate the action with the reward. Consistency is key! :raised_hands:

Great idea, I didn’t think to add a word to mark it! I’ll try that and see if it helps her catch on faster. Thanks!

I had the same issue with my pup! It might help to make the training sessions shorter so she doesn’t get too frustrated. Keep it fun and rewarding!

Good call, I was trying to do long sessions, but maybe she’s just getting overwhelmed. I’ll keep it short and sweet! Thanks! :paw_prints:

Try doing the training in a quiet room with no distractions. I found that helped my dog focus way more. The less chaos, the better! :dog2:

Ah, that makes sense. She gets distracted so easily, so I’ll definitely give it a try in a calmer space. Thanks for the suggestion! :+1:

Don’t forget to keep practicing in different environments as she gets the hang of it. Dogs can get so used to one spot that they forget the command elsewhere! :earth_africa:

That’s a good point! I’ve been practicing in the same place, so I’ll switch it up. Thanks for the reminder! :dog:
