I saw bitter apple spray recommended online as a deterrent for puppy chewing.
Has anyone used it for furniture training? Is it effective and truly dog-safe?
While the product claims to be dog-friendly, I am cautious and prioritize my pup’s well-being.
Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated!
It has always worked incredibly well for all of my puppies, so I’ve used it. You must be present in the room in order to use the home line and divert them from items they shouldn’t chew. When you’re not around, bitter apple spray is a terrific idea because it prevents them from practicing chewing on inappropriate objects.
The spray worked great. It taught our puppy to chew only on her toys and stopped her from chewing on furniture and cords.
When she was little, we always watched her, but she kept trying to chew the coffee table and couch legs. Even with training, we had to stop her every few minutes. The bitter spray made things a lot easier and faster.
Bitter apple spray is a common pet training product used to deter dogs and cats from chewing on furniture, wires, or other household items. The spray contains a bitter-tasting compound, usually denatonium benzoate, that creates an unpleasant taste and smell when applied to surfaces. When a pet tries to chew on an area treated with bitter apple spray, the unpleasant sensation encourages them to stop the unwanted behavior. Many pet owners find bitter apple spray to be an effective, non-toxic way to protect their belongings from curious or destructive chewing. The spray is easy to apply and the effects are temporary, so it requires reapplication over time. While not a permanent solution, bitter apple spray can be a helpful training tool when used alongside positive reinforcement to curb unwanted chewing habits in dogs and cats.
