Our 8-month old shepherd/husky/everything mix is quite the jumper. She gets onto the bed with ease at night, and the bed is 30 inches high. We tried putting up a gate the same height, but she jumped over that easily. Recently, I found a 41-inch gate that seems like it might work to keep her in the room. Do you think this will stop her? Thanks.
I have a jumper too. My dog can jump ridiculously high from a standstill, and he’s easily cleared a 41-inch gate. I had to train him to ‘respect’ the gate. Even though he could jump over it, he doesn’t; unless he really wants to be with me. It might hold your dog back, but you’ll probably need some training too.
@Joseph
I agree with this. My dog can jump over a regular baby gate like it’s nothing. The taller gates slow her down a bit, but the real solution was training. I worked on mat training to keep her out of the dining room while my kids ate. Now she stays on her mat in the kitchen, giving us the occasional sad look.
@Joseph
Thanks for sharing that. How did you train them to stop jumping over? I was thinking about setting up a routine where she’s locked in the room for a set time each day, gradually building up to me leaving the space and eventually the house.
I think it really depends on your dog. We don’t know how high she can jump. I bet she will try to clear it though.
If she can already jump 30 inches, she’ll probably figure out how to clear 41 pretty quickly. I’d suggest going even taller if possible. You might get a few days with the 41-inch gate, but eventually, she’ll find a way to beat it. Try a gate that will make her think, ‘Nope, this isn’t happening,’ rather than ‘Hmm, how do I get past this?’
We have a jumper too. We put a gate with a door on the bottom of the frame to let him in and out. We added a cheap expandable gate above that because we don’t use it often, and when we do, we crawl through.
I don’t know the exact inches, but my lab jumped over my 4-foot backyard fence.
