Ever since our dog Cooper got neutered 2 weeks ago (he’s 7 months), he’s been acting up. He used to be super chill and obedient, but now he’s chewing through everything and just not listening. He’s even ruined 3 rugs and climbed on the kitchen table! Is this normal? What can we do?
Sounds like separation anxiety, especially since it happens when you’re not home. Have you tried any training exercises to help him cope?

Not specifically for anxiety. He does know basic commands like sit, stay, etc., but we haven’t done much beyond that.

You could try building his confidence with short training sessions throughout the day. Stuff like a ‘down stay’ might help him feel more secure when alone.

Good idea! Any tips for starting that kind of training?
Have you thought about getting him some toys that keep him busy? Like a Kong stuffed with treats or a treat ball.

We haven’t tried that yet. Do you think that’ll keep him entertained while we’re at work?

It worked for my dog! The Kong with frozen peanut butter is a lifesaver. Keeps them busy for hours.
He might just be going through a rebellious phase. Dogs can act like teenagers around this age lol. Keep up the training and stay consistent!

Teenage phase makes sense! Any tips to survive it?

Patience and routine! Maybe switch up his environment or your routine to keep him on his toes.
If he’s pacing when you leave, it might help to not make a big deal about goodbyes. Like, no hugs or baby talk before you go.

That’s interesting. We’ve been saying goodbye every time we leave. I’ll try just sneaking out instead.

Yeah, and don’t hype him up when you come back either. It helps them stay calm.
Have you heard of anxiety wraps or calming diffusers? They can work wonders for some dogs.

I’ve heard of those! Any brands you’d recommend?

Adaptil makes a good calming diffuser. Worked for my pup during fireworks season.
