How can a man be calmed when he notices a female nearby is in heat?

Next month, my 1-year-old male puppy who is intact will get his teeth cleaned. Regretfully, the female across the street has just become fertile. All day long, he is pacing, complaining, and panting. He constantly interrupts me when I’m attempting to work from home, which is not how he usually behaves.

I’ve extended his playtime, increased the frequency and length of our regular walks, and generally tried to be understanding.

What more would you suggest doing to make him feel better? I do not want to endure this for another two to four weeks.

This really cannot be fixed. Though this is an innate behavior, you can try to keep him busy for brief periods of time with puzzles, new toys, and licki mats. Honestly, it might be worse than pacing and whining—male dogs, especially unneutered ones, would do almost anything to get to a female when she is in heat—they could be tearing at the door or fence to get out and go to her. You will simply have to wait it out.

So neutered guys will still be drawn to females while they’re in heat?

Yes, exactly like they still lift a leg to indicate objects. I’ve saw a neutered male actually scale a chain link fence in an attempt to reach a female dog who was in heat.

I believe that you could “fix him” by neutering him, but not the behavior.

It is possible to remove the nuts from the dog, but not the other way around.

They will essentially become a feral animal as a result. It’s somewhat crazy. All you have to do is take them apart.
