My dog used to be super friendly, but ever since she got attacked by another dog, she tries to lunge or bark whenever she sees one on the street. Now I’m kind of avoiding walks altogether. Has anyone dealt with this? Any advice?
I’ve been there! My dog had a bad experience too. I started by walking her at a distance from other dogs, and we slowly got closer over time.

So, like, you just gradually let her get closer when she seemed calm?
@Woof
Yep, exactly! It’s all about keeping her comfortable. It’s a slow process, but totally worth it.
You might want to try teaching her to ‘turn away’ from dogs. I use treats to get my dog’s attention on me instead of other dogs.

Interesting! Do you just call her and reward her if she turns back to you?

Exactly! It helps her focus on me instead of the other dogs. Keeps things a lot calmer.
Honestly, if she’s really anxious, a professional trainer might help. I had to do this with my dog after a similar situation.

Good point… I was hoping to manage on my own, but maybe that’s the way to go.
Another idea is to avoid meeting strange dogs on walks. Focus on just her, don’t let any other dogs get close if you can help it.

Makes sense. I’m thinking keeping her space might help her feel safer.
If she’s scared of changes during walks too, maybe try keeping a consistent route for now? Could help her feel more in control.

That’s a good idea, actually! I’ll try sticking to the same path for a while.
