I have a 5.5-month-old Duck Toller who jumps on people every time he meets someone new. I know he is just a puppy, but his jumping is out of control. Even after spending time with a new person, he sometimes jumps up and gets mouthy towards their faces.
Has anyone successfully trained their dog to stop jumping on people? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am desperate to prevent this from becoming a lifelong habit.
I had a similar issue with my puppy who was also quite jumpy around new people. What worked for me was consistent training and positive reinforcement. I taught my dog to sit and stay as a default behavior when meeting new people. Whenever he jumped, I calmly redirected him to sit and rewarded him when he stayed down. It helped to ask visitors to ignore him until he was calm, then give attention. Training sessions should be brief but regular, focusing on rewarding good behavior and gently correcting unwanted actions. Patience and consistency are key, and soon you’ll likely see improvement in his behavior!
