Hello dog lovers, my dad’s German Shepherd isn’t trained and he most recently attacked me. I am now convinced that it’s time to try make some friendship with him. I’ve been avoiding eye contact since he growled at me the last time I maintained eye contact, but after five days of bringing him treats, he’s been getting excited and even started jumping when I looked at him today. Does this mean we’re making progress? Is this how I should go about it?
Great progress bro, but don’t give him a treat while he’s jumping, or he’ll think jumping is okay. You can maybe check out a video on teaching a dog to sit, so you know when to give commands and treats, and what to do with your hand. Also, ensure you use a firm and confident voice, while paying attention to his body language to see whether he is calm or tense? Are his ears pointed at you or pulled back? Is his tail wagging loosely, or is it stiff and straight? This is all I got for a beginner. I hope this helps.
Looks like you’re winning him over one treat at a time! Patience (and plenty of snacks) is the trick with these loyal but stubborn dogs. Keep it up, you could soon have a new best buddy!
Wait, after the dog attacked you, your dad didn’t think about getting it trained? Every dog needs some training, for real. He needs to be serious about it.
Do you think I can start training him once we’re cool? I honestly have no idea how to train dogs, and hiring a trainer is out of the budget.
Yeah, I think that should be fine. Just equip yourself with a number of articles for beginner dog training sessions. You should be fine.
But why won’t your dad train his dog? In this day and era people still live with untrained dogs? Y’all should do better.
