How do I stop my dog from biting my girlfriend?

So, my Australian Cattle Dog, Rogue, has been biting and growling at my girlfriend whenever she makes a move toward me. He’s super loyal and I get that, but it’s becoming a real issue. Anyone have advice on how to calm him down around her?

I totally get where you’re coming from! My dog did something similar. Maybe try having your girlfriend give him treats whenever she’s close to you? It could help him see her as a friend, not a threat.

That’s a smart idea! So, basically rewarding calm behavior around her with treats?

@Isabelle
Exactly! It’s all about positive association. Every time he stays relaxed, he gets a treat, so he starts to see her presence as a good thing.

I’d suggest starting with basic commands like ‘sit’ or ‘stay’ when she’s around. It helps them feel in control and less threatened.

Good call. I’ll work on that with him. Hopefully, it’ll give him something else to focus on!

You could also try using a calming aid like Adaptil, which is a pheromone spray or collar. It’s supposed to help with anxiety in dogs.

Oh, never heard of that before. So it’s like a spray that helps him chill out?

Yep! It can really help calm him down without any meds. Just something to consider!

I’ve read that having the person your dog is nervous about give them a favorite toy can help build trust too. Maybe try that?

That’s a good idea. I think he’d definitely warm up to her if she was holding his favorite toy!

Protective behavior like this can be tricky. Consistency is key—make sure you’re using the same commands and rewards every time.

Thanks! I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Hoping with time and patience, he’ll calm down around her.
