How do I stop my dogs from chasing the cat?

Hey everyone! I recently adopted a second dog, and now my first dog has started chasing our poor cat. She never used to do this until the new dog came along. It’s like she’s feeding off his energy. The second dog, Teddy, is more energetic, and sometimes they both chase the cat together. I want to help my cat feel safe again and also keep my dogs calm. Any advice?

Sounds like your new dog is adding some extra excitement to the house! Have you tried redirecting their attention when they see the cat?

I’ve tried distracting them with toys, but it doesn’t always work. Any specific tips for redirection?

@Jane
Kong toys stuffed with peanut butter or treats could work. Keeps them busy and their focus off the cat.

Do your dogs get enough exercise? Sometimes burning off energy can help with this kind of behavior.

I’ve got a knee injury, so long walks are hard. I do have a dog walker, but not every day. Any other ideas?

@Jane
Try mental exercises! Puzzle toys or even using a walking pad at home can help wear them out.

You mentioned your first dog growls at Teddy sometimes. Does she seem to be setting boundaries?

Yeah, she growls when he gets too wild, and it calms him down. I don’t correct her since it seems harmless.

@Jane
That’s totally fine! Dogs use growling to communicate boundaries. As long as it doesn’t escalate, you’re good.

Maybe the chasing is more about play than aggression? How does the cat react?

The cat definitely doesn’t see it as play. She runs and hides, which just makes the dogs want to chase more.

@Jane
If that’s the case, try using baby gates or separate spaces for the cat and dogs to give her some peace.

How’s Teddy adjusting overall? Sometimes new dogs just need time to settle into the routine.

He’s definitely bringing a lot of energy! I’m hoping he’ll calm down soon with more structure and training.

@Jane
Routine helps a lot. Keep at it, and maybe add some consistent training sessions for both dogs.
