My dog loves to jump on everyone when they come over or even when we’re out for walks. It’s cute, but it’s starting to get a little annoying. Any tips on how to stop this? I’ve heard that some training methods work, but IDK where to start. Any suggestions?
I had the same problem! What worked for me was using treats to redirect his attention when people came over. You should try using treats to encourage good behavior when the doorbell rings.

That’s a great idea! I’ve heard about this method but never tried it myself. So, you use treats to get their focus, right?
@Faithjones
Yeah, exactly! I hold the treat and when they try to jump, I ask them to sit or stay. It helps redirect their energy and they get rewarded for staying calm.
A trainer once told me to practice ‘sit’ with distractions, like knocking on the door or having people walk by. The idea is to get them used to staying seated no matter what.

Ohh, so like training them to stay seated while people come and go? That sounds useful. Thanks for the tip!
Yeah, I had this issue too. I started stepping on the leash when people came in. It prevents them from jumping up, and then you can reward them when they stay calm.

That’s an interesting approach! So you step on the leash to stop them from jumping? I’ll definitely give that a try!

Yep! It works pretty well, especially when they’re excited to see someone. The trick is to stay consistent!
I also found it helpful to have a friend or family member act as the ‘visitor’ for training. It’s like real-life practice for your dog!

That’s a good point! It’s like socializing them with people in a controlled way. I’ll have my partner help me out with that.
My dog’s the same way, but I learned that if I just wait and ignore the jumping, they eventually calm down and sit on their own. Not sure if it works for all dogs, but it’s been helpful for me.

I’ve heard about that, too! Just ignoring them until they settle down, right? I’ll try that too and see if it helps.
