Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking about training my dog to be a service dog, but I’m not sure where to start. How hard is it to actually train a dog for this? I’ve got a Shar Pei mix, but I’m not even sure if they’re good for this kind of thing. Any advice or tips would be appreciated!
It usually takes a lot of time and effort—like 1-2 years of consistent training. Does your dog have a calm temperament?

He’s pretty chill most of the time, but he does get distracted easily. Does that mean he’s not a good fit?

Not necessarily, but it might make training harder. Distractions can be worked on with practice and patience.
Have you had him evaluated by a trainer? They can give you a better idea if he’s suitable for service work.

Not yet, but I’m thinking about it. What kind of things do they look for in an evaluation?

Mostly how stable the dog is—like how they react to loud noises, people, or distractions. Food motivation helps too.
Shar Peis aren’t super common for service work, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Every dog is different.

Yeah, I’ve heard that they’re not usually used. Do you know why that is?

Probably because they can be stubborn, but with the right approach, you might be able to train him!
Public access training is a big part of it too. You’d need to make sure your dog is comfortable in busy places.

That might be tough… he’s not used to crowded areas. Any tips to ease him into that?

Start small, like a quiet park, and slowly work up to busier places. Reward calm behavior with treats.
If you’re not sure about doing it all yourself, consider working with a trainer. They can set a solid foundation.

That’s a good idea. Do you know if boarding programs are worth it for this kind of training?

They can be helpful, but make sure to find a trainer who has experience with service dogs.
