How to get your dog to pee outside

I don’t really want to use a crate for my dog. Is there any other way?

You can get your dog to pee outside by taking them out frequently, especially after meals and naps. Use treats and praise when they go outside to reinforce the behavior. Set up a specific spot for them to go and always take them there. Keep an eye on them indoors and quickly redirect them outside if they start to pee inside.

Take your puppy outside frequently—at least every two hours—and right after they wake up, during and after playtime, and after eating or drinking. Choose a specific spot outside for bathroom breaks and always take your puppy (on a leash) to that spot.

Take the dog outside. Wait. As soon as it pees/poops, go OVER THE TOP on praise: Good dog! Best dog! So smart! So clever! So good! Dogs are tone deaf compared to humans, so they might miss on subtle signs of happiness and praise. Be a drama queen/king. When the dog is inside, watch it to see if it starts to sniff/circle and then call it outside right away if it does. If it then poops/pees, again with the praise. Most dogs get the idea pretty quickly, though a puppy might take a bit to develop the physical control of its bladder.

Sometimes boy dogs have to be ‘potty trained’ again as teenage dogs because they see peeing to scent mark and peeing to get rid of excess fluid as two separate things.
