I recently adopted a 12-week-old miniature poodle named Astra. We work from the office for up to 8 hours, and I’ve been training him to be okay at home alone. I try to come back after 4 hours for 15-20 minutes to check on him, but he gets pretty agitated when I return and leave again. He’s got a playpen with an open crate, and he seems to calm himself down after whining for about 20 minutes. Should I keep checking in or just let him stay alone for the whole 8 hours?
I’d say if he’s calming down on his own, you might not need to come back during the day. How’s he handling the crate?

He’s great with the crate! Sleeps through the night without any issues and even goes there to relax during the day.
@NICKY
That’s awesome. Sounds like he’s doing well. Maybe try skipping the midday check and see if he’s okay.
Have you thought about giving him some extra mental stimulation, like a treat puzzle, while you’re away?

I’ve got a chew toy and a rubber ball in there for him. Any specific puzzles you’d recommend?

Something like a Kong filled with treats could keep him busy for a while. My dog loves those!
How many meals is he getting? Puppies sometimes whine if they’re hungry too.

He’s used to two meals a day, but I’ve started giving him a light snack at lunchtime. It seems to help a bit.
@NICKY
That’s a good idea! At his age, three smaller meals are usually better to keep their energy up.
If he’s whining for 20 minutes and then calming down, that’s pretty normal. Puppies just need time to adjust.

Good to know! I was worried I might be doing something wrong. He does seem to figure it out eventually.
What’s your plan for potty breaks during the day? That’s usually the trickiest part with young puppies.

I try to give him a quick potty break when I check in at lunch, but it’s not always possible.
