I have a dog that I intend to equip with scent training or search and rescue but I don’t know where to start., My end goal is to volunteer for search and rescue organizations,
Just follow these eight tips for training a search-and-rescue dog:
- Practice obedience training: Consistent obedience is essential for SAR dogs.
- Increase your dog’s focus: Enhance your dog’s concentration skills.
- Create a scent path: Teach your dog to follow scent trails.
- Play hide-and-seek: Use games to improve your dog’s search abilities.
- Practice in the snow: Train your dog in various weather conditions.
- Take your dog swimming: Incorporate water training to build versatility.
- Get your dog used to sounds: Acclimate your dog to different noises.
- Socialize your dog: Ensure your dog is comfortable around people and other animals.
Search and rescue (SAR) dogs are trained by their owners. You can’t do it alone; you need a team and a mentor to help you. Also, you must qualify to be a searcher yourself.
